There Is No Rose
SATB Choir a cappella. Composed for the choir of the University of the South (Sewanee) and its 2016 service of Lessons and Carols, this is a luscious setting of the familiar medieval text that your choir will love. Full of beautiful dissonances and soaring lines, this is sure to become a favorite.
There is no rose of such virtue
As is the rose that bare Jesu;
Alleluia.
For in this rose contained was
Heaven and earth in little space;
Res miranda. (A wonderful thing)
By that rose we may well see
That he is God in persons three,
Pares forma. (Of the same form)
The angels sungen the shepherds to:
Gloria in excelsis deo: (Glory to God on high)
Gaudeamus. (Let us rejoice)
Leave we all this worldly mirth,
And follow we this joyful birth;
Transeamus. (Let us go)
